“Stop stressing about it and will just happen.”
“Just relax and let it happen.”
“Stop putting so much pressure on yourself!”
“Worry will make it worse, just let it go!”
When we are seeking the sincerest desires of our hearts – the next step in life we are aching for – these words of advice come often from those around us. Whether it is finding a spouse, trying to conceive, or waiting for a wayward child to come back, it seems that the answer is to give up, to stop trying. But when it is the thing you want most, how do you stop trying?

This last weekend we had the privilege of driving up to see my sister-in-law Sierra perform in the BYU Women’s Chorus Spring Recital. As an added bonus, we also were able to get tickets to a session of General Conference for Griffin and me, Sierra and her friend, and my in-laws.
Friday evening, we were able to catch a portion of the choir practice, which was amazing, and then we returned later to see them tear it up with a variety of talent-filled pieces. The hymns they sang really brought the spirit and the more fun pieces really brought joy to the audience.
What surprisingly affected me the most (as a precursor to conference) was the guest choir. Before they would sing certain pieces, both the BYU Women’s Chorus and the guest choir, would read aloud the lyrics. I found this very helpful, both from a musical stand-point and it helped me understand the feeling the song was meant to have before it was sung.
The Guest Choir sung a religious number with very few lyrics, but the lyrics it did have were very powerful and very striking for me.

Stay positive. Have a good attitude. Have faith. Focus on something else. I can be patient. I can do hard things. It’s not as hard a trial as I thought.
I think we all give ourselves a version of this pep talk when we are experiencing a trial or enduring a particularly difficult experience. I know I have. We want to psych ourselves up; We are good people and we are strong. This trial isn’t as trying as you would think. People can’t even tell I am having a hard time, right? So people who look close shouldn’t be able to tell either. Right? Continue reading Must We Struggle Through our Struggles?
There are times in life when our faith doesn’t seem to fill up the cup anymore. When our attitude has shifted. When we want to do great things and want to succeed and feel that joy from the success after the struggle and it just doesn’t happen the way we thought.
What do we do when that leap of faith for Him seems like too big a step, like too far a jump or just too much to ask?

Sometimes I stand in awe of the beauty of life. When the littlest thing can touch my very being. When the majesty of love and friendship and connection and the beauty of God’s creations take my breath away.

Over the last few months I have had a great desire to improve my life, my heart, my mind and my spirit, but have been unable to do so. On my own.
Over the last few weeks I have had several faith-strengthening experiences; some have been from kind words from friends, others from lessons in church, and several directly from God. When I use the word directly, I use it quite literally. When we submit our will to our Savior Jesus Christ, we make room in our lives for amazing things to happen. The scriptures are full of miraculous events: Moses parting the Red Sea, the deliverance of Jonah from the mouth of the whale, angels closing the mouths of the lions to protect Daniel, the feeding of the 5,000 and countless others.
To contrast these large miracles of the Lord, let us study this “smaller miracle,” so we may better understand the love God has for each of His children, in a real and personal way. Continue reading The Heavens are Open!
I find it interesting that my post yesterday focuses on how hard this life can be and how we knew it would be that way. We also knew that these last days before the second coming would be just as hard. But that is not what I want to talk about today.
Today I want to talk about one of the most amazing gifts we have on this earth today: Our Prophet.
